AI Literacy: What Families, Schools, and Leaders Should Understand

AI literacy is no longer only a technical skill. It is becoming a practical civic skill: knowing what AI can do, where it can fail, and what questions to ask before trusting it.

AI literacy does not mean everyone needs to become a programmer, machine-learning researcher, or daily follower of technology news.

It means people need enough understanding to make sensible decisions when AI systems enter their homes, schools, workplaces, and institutions.

That is a different kind of literacy: practical, social, and civic.

What AI literacy includes

A useful starting point is knowing that modern AI systems can produce fluent answers without truly understanding the world in the way people do. They can summarise, draft, classify, translate, plan, and generate images or code. They can also make mistakes, invent details, reflect biases, overstate confidence, and hide uncertainty behind polished language.

For families

Families are already encountering AI through homework tools, search, social media, entertainment, photo apps, and phones. The question is no longer whether children will meet AI. They already have.
